Feb 11, 2016  ::  Wednesday, January 27, was a “Celebration of Music” event for Christopher Columbus Middle School in Canoga Park.

The event was prompted by the $40,000 donation from the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation that included cellos, flutes, violins, violas, marching band drums, trombones, baritones, French horns, and saxophones, just to name a few of the gifts received.

Joining the enthusiastic celebration with the Columbus students, staff and parents were the teacher band UN-Common Core, Canoga Park Neighborhood Council President Corrine Ho, Instructional Director Joe Nacorda, and Local District Superintendent Vivian Ekchian, who encouraged and challenged CCMS students to pursue their passion and make a difference in their community.

This donation will greatly enhance the Columbus Middle School music program by replacing old and worn instruments and accommodating the increasing number of students interested in the music program. With that in mind, it was the appropriate time for Principal Debra McIntyre-Sciarrino to announce the creation of a new Small Learning Community beginning in Fall 2016, The Conservatory of Music at CCMS.
