L.A. Unified to send layoff notices to hundreds of teachers

03/10/15

Hundreds of teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School District will receive layoff notices this month under a budget plan approved Tuesday by the Board of Education.

The vote does not necessarily mean that the teachers will lose their jobs, but it allows L.A. Unified the option of releasing the instructors if needed. Instructors and other employees with teaching credentials have to be notified by law of a possible layoff by March 15.

LAUSD board approves layoff warnings with final notices to come later

The Los Angeles Unified school board is warning 609 counselors, foreign language and art teachers and other employees they may be reassigned or laid off at the end of the school year.

Administrators project a deficit of $160 million next school year and say the layoffs may be necessary to keep the district afloat. Once final budget figures are in, the district can – and often does – rescind what are known as RIFs, or Reduction in Force notices.
