Action Required: SUPPORT ACCESS TO FREE, FRESH DRINKING WATER IN SCHOOLS

from the California Center for Public Health Advocacy

SB 1413 (Leno), which will ensure students should have access to fresh, free drinking water when they eat meals at school, will soon be voted upon by the full Assembly. Please write your Assemblymember and urge them to vote "Yes" on SB 1413.

By ensuring all students have access to fresh, free drinking water in food service areas at school, California can help kids form healthy beverage consumption habits during the school day and beyond. As a calorie‐free beverage, tap water is a healthy, no‐cost alternative to sugary sodas, juices, sports drinks, bottled water, and other packaged drinks. Increasing consumption of drinking water and reducing consumption of sweetened beverages are key strategies for hydration and obesity prevention. Guaranteeing students ready access to drinking water at school promotes learning and equity and helps create healthy school environments.

Deadline for responding: Please take action by August 20, 2010.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Richard
