Jun. 16, 2008 — LOS ANGELES, June 16 -- Global Green USA presented its 12th Annual Millennium Awards honoring leading innovators for their extraordinary environmental contributions on Saturday, June 14th at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica.
Alfre Woodard hosted the event, which recognizes those whose lives and livelihood embody Global Green USA's mission of fostering a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure world.
"As our communities grapple with the global and local threats posed by climate change, it is exciting to be reminded of some of the extraordinary initiatives that individual, corporate and government leaders are pioneering to help create and implement solutions to global warming," said Global Green USA President and CEO Matt Petersen. "These honorees demonstrate that smart solutions to global warming exist, are economically viable and provide invaluable health and environmental benefits to our communities."
California Environmental Leadership Award

Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is being recognized for building more new healthy green schools than any other school district in the country. LAUSD is creating a healthy, high-performing learning environment for tens of thousands of children and teachers while helping to protect the environment for people throughout the region.
Entertainment Industry Environmental Leadership Award
Lyn Davis Lear
Lyn Lear is known for her extraordinary leadership and personal commitment to environmental issues. Mrs. Lear's determination and role in co-founding the Environmental Media Association (EMA) with Cindy Horn in 1989 has been critical in pushing the agenda of environmental awareness. The Environmental Media Association's mission is to mobilize the entertainment industry in a global effort to educate people about environmental issues, which in turn, inspires them to take action.
Community Environmental Leadership Award
Van Jones
Van Jones is working to combine solutions to America's two biggest problems: social inequality and environmental destruction. Jones is President and Founder of Green For All, a national organization dedicated to building an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty. Previously, Jones was President of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, an organization he co-founded in 1996 that promotes alternatives to violence and incarceration.

The South Group (Gerding Edlen/Williams & Dame Development)

The South Group has set the bar for the private development sector in Los Angeles to construct healthier green buildings that are solutions to climate change, while producing greater financial returns. As a demonstration of Mr. Edlen's and Mr. Williams' -- and the South Group's -- leadership, one of their two LEED Gold certified buildings in downtown Los Angeles served as the site of the announcement of the City of LA and Mayor Villaraigosa's new green building program, which Global Green helped develop.

Global Green USA was founded by Diane Meyer Simon in 1993 to serve as the American arm of President Gorbachev's Green Cross International. Global Green is a national leader in smart climate change solutions including green building for communities and schools. Global Green has engaged the Hollywood community to help advocate for climate solutions through its annual pre-Oscar party and Red Carpet Green Cars Academy Awards event. In 2006, Global Green launched its Sustainable Design Competition for New Orleans, and on May 15, 2008 Global Green USA and the Home Depot Foundation successfully unveiled the first complete green affordable housing project in the Lower 9th Ward, the Holy Cross Project.
